What I'm up to

Long time, no blog post!  I apologize.  I started on a new adventure this week and, well, I can barely keep up right now and my blog posting - well, it just hasn't been a priority.  I apologize!  Fortunately though - I don't look like this guy!!

I started subbing this week!  I've been in a library, with kindergartners, and in a 6th grade classroom.  It's been better than I thought in some ways, more difficult than I thought in others.  I have learned a few things about myself this week.  First - I am not the tough disciplinarian I thought I was.  In fact, I'm lost when they start getting very chatty.  I don't know what to do about it when they get going.  I really don't.  I already know this is something I will have to figure out or some classes may just eat me alive.  Second - I love kindergarten hugs :)  Third - I already knew this - but I'm NOT good at flying by the seat of my pants.  I'm going to have to do more planning because sometimes, the lesson plans left are not enough.  Fourth - it's not half as hard as I thought it would be.   Fifth - I have to find some way to sleep the night before I sub.  I get all worked up and don't sleep.  I'm getting tired out :)

It's been good.  I wish I had thought of this a long time ago - the money is good.  I will say this - if someone says subbing is not difficult work - think again.  I'm exhausted.  It's FUN - but I experienced on a certain day this week that subs, with some classes, don't get a whole lot of respect.  Boundaries are tested, limits are pushed.  It's a little tiring to have to go with the flow, expect anything and everything, and not be able to prepare for any of it.  However - in the very short time I've done this - I already know - it's also rewarding.  There's nothing like a class full of kindergartners yelling "THANK YOU MRS. BLENDER" (somehow they got "blender" out of "Moreno" - I have no idea), a hug on your leg just because,  and the words "Your the BEST sub we've had this year".  All of that makes the rougher hours/classes worth it.  I hope my experience continues to go well.  So far - so good.

Other than all THAT this week, we've had 2 track meets and a soccer game.  Tomorrow, we have 2 more - 3 hours away.  We have to leave at 6 a.m.   AND mother's day is this weekend.  As of right now - can I selfishly say - I hope I don't get a sub call on Monday??

Anywho - I will try to find a way to start posting more often - even if it means posting ahead or something.  Organization is something I will need to work on this week if I am to survive as a career woman!!

Thanks for sticking with me faithful readers!  I'll try to give you more "meat" this weekend :)

glad you are enjoying subbing! You are right, it is a lot of work. The best subs come in prepared with games and ideas to keep the kids busy. You can also create a little award system that will work in some cases - just bring inexpensive candy in a jar or pencils or stickers for the littles and give out prizes. I only did elementary so I'm not sure what would work with the bigger kids!
